New 2017 Hyundai Accent

2017 Hyundai Accent Overview

  • Small exterior, large interior for its category
  • New Value Edition trim level for the sedan
  • Available Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio
The 2017 Hyundai Accent is a compact car that comes as a sedan or a hatchback. It competes with the Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris, and Honda Fit. The hatchback has two trim levels: the SE and Sport, while the sedan gains a new Value Edition trim level on top of the SE base trim.

In the looks department, the Accent continues another year unchanged. The front-end features a hexagonal, sculpted motif that frames the upper chrome grille and lower fascia. It also has aggressive headlights, a rear center high-mounted stop light, and 14-inch steel wheels. The Sport hatchback comes with projector headlights with LED signature lights, front fog lights, power/heated side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, and a rear spoiler. The Value Edition sedan comes with rear disc brakes and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Under the hood, the Accent has a smaller engine that matches its size, a 138-hp, 1.6-liter four-cylinder that is mated to a six-speed manual transmission or an available six-speed automatic. Fuel economy ratings are estimated at 27/37 mpg city/highway with the manual and 26/67 mpg with the automatic. The Accent also features an Active Eco mode which alters the engine/throttle response when activated via a button on the dashboard to help you drive more efficiently.

Inside, the Accent does a good job of maximizing the amount of usable space in the interior. Even though the Accent is priced and sized like subcompact with a small wheelbase and not much width, it has so much passenger volume that the EPA actually classifies it as a compact car. Hatchback models offer 21.2 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seats (more than a midsize sedan), with sedans offering 13.7 cubic feet. The Accent also offers a good amount of standard features considering its miniscule base price, with a 60/40-split folding rear seat, USB port, air conditioning, and power windows and locks coming on all models. Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, and steering wheel mounted controls are optional.

The Accent earned a 4- out of 5-star overall crash test safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Standard safety features include six airbags, antilock brakes, and an electronic stability system.
