New 2016 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

2016 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Overview

  • Hybrid version of the Crosstrek
  • Updated front styling for 2016
  • Offers 4 more combined mpg than the gas version
The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid returns for 2016 with updated styling, a new name, and superior fuel economy to the gasoline version.

Last year, the Crosstrek Hybrid was known as the XV Crosstrek Hybrid but Subaru saw those leading letters as extraneous and they have been dropped. Additional updates include changes to the front styling, where a new grille, bumper, and headlights have been added.

From the outside the two models look very alike; the Hybrid keeps the rugged, heavily cladded appearance of the gas-only version, adding unique alloy wheels and small hybrid badges in a few places. But underneath the skin, the Crosstrek Hybrid gets extra few changes including active grille shutters that make it more aerodynamic, and therefore more fuel efficient. There is also a unique Plasma Green Pearl exterior paint color available exclusively on the Hybrid as well.

The Crosstrek Hybrid has the same 148-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine as the gas version, but adds a 13.4-hp electric motor powered by a nickel-metal-hydride battery that is stashed beneath the cargo floor, behind the second row of seats. A CVT is the only transmission option, and the Crosstrek Hybrid is one of the few hybrids on the market with standard all-wheel drive. Subaru says the electric motor is capable of moving the car by itself under light acceleration. Fuel economy ratings check in at 30/34 mpg city/highway, which add up to a 32 mpg combined rating which bests the gas-only version by 4.

Inside, the Crosstrek Hybrid includes solid technology offerings, such as the STARLINK multimedia system with a standard 6.2-inch touchscreen. It also incorporates HD radio, internet radio streaming via a smartphone, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port. Higher trim levels receive a larger 7-inch screen with a navigation system that accepts voice commands optional. Also standard are heated front seats, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, 60/40-split folding rear seat, and automatic climate control. A voice activated navigation system is optional, as are HD radio and leather upholstery.

The Crosstrek Hybrid has not been crash tested as of this writing, but the 2016 Crosstrek received a coveted Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. A backup camera comes standard, as do antilock brakes, seven airbags, and electronic stability control. Subaru’s EyeSight system is optional; it adds two forward facing cameras that power driver assist technology like adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane departure warnings. Newly available for 2016 are a blind spot warning system and emergency communication services, such as automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle recovery, and remote locking/unlocking.
