New 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport Overview

  • Five-seat, two-row version of the Santa Fe crossover
  • Excellent crash test ratings
  • Carryover model for 2016 (minimal changes)
Hyundai produces two variants of its Santa Fe midsize crossover and the 2016 Santa Fe Sport is the smaller of the two, shorter by 8.5-inches and lighter by over 250 pounds which makes it quicker and more efficient than the larger, three-row Santa Fe.

The Santa Fe Sport seats five passengers across two-rows and carries over mostly unchanged for the new model year. The exterior styling is angular, with sharp headlamps and a large version of Hyundai’s hexagonal front grille up front. Last year, the Santa Fe Sport added an optional hands-free power liftgate. If you stand behind the Santa Fe Sport with the key fob on your person for three seconds and the liftgate will open automatically.

Under the hood, the Santa Fe Sport offers a pair of four-cylinder engine options split up by trim level. Sport models feature the base engine, a 190-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder. Sport 2.0T models get a more powerful 264-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that is shared with the Sonata Turbo. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission exclusively. An all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring for better traction is available; towing capability tops out at 3,500 pounds.

Inside, the Santa Fe Sport offers a cabin that punches above its weight offering plenty of standard equipment with good fit and finish for its class. The design is unmistakably Hyundai, with several different layers that mix materials as you move down the dash from top to bottom. Standard features include a 40/20/40-split folding rear seat, air conditioning, a USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, and BlueLink telematics. The Santa Fe Sport also offers plenty in the way of available features, with leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a navigation system with an 8-inch touchscreen all optional.

The 2016 Santa Fe Sport performed well in crash tests, earning a full five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, their highest rating. Seven airbags, an electronic stability system, and antilock brakes come standard, with plenty of other safety technology optional such as blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alerts, lane change assist, a rearview camera, and automatic headlights.
