New 2016 GMC Canyon

2016 GMC Canyon Overview

  • Midsize pickup truck that is very similar to the Chevrolet Colorado
  • New turbo-diesel engine option (available late in 2015)
  • Flexible bed with CornerStep cutouts in the rear bumper for easier access
The 2016 GMC Canyon is one of two midsize pickup trucks offered by GM, joining the Chevrolet Colorado as the American automaker returns to the midsize segment.

Prior to last year, the only pickup trucks available from GM were full-size and heavy duty. But as consumers have proved that they want the utility of a truck, but maybe not the size, the Colorado and Canyon both returned last year for the first time since 2012.

The Canyon looks similar to other vehicles in the GMC lineup, with a three-bar front grille similar to the one found on the Acadia SUV. It is a muscular, sculpted design with prominent fenders and squared off headlight clusters. 16-inch wheels are standard, with larger 17- and 18-inch wheels available. Two cab sizes are offered (Extended and Crew) with Crew Cab models offering a choice between a short or long box.

Under the hood, the 2016 Canyon offers three engine options. The base engine is a 205-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 191 pounds-feet of torque. A more powerful 305-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 making 269 pounds-feet of torque is optional. Both come mated to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Maximum payload capacity is 1,620 pounds, while trailering tops out at 7,000 pounds when properly equipped. Two-wheel drive is standard, with four-wheel drive optional. The Canyon adds a new engine option for 2016, a 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel that will be the most efficient of the three (exact specs are unavailable as of this writing). It will be available later in 2015

Inside, the Canyon is more upscale than the Colorado, offering slightly better materials and fit/finish. The dashboard echoes the exterior design; it’s minimalist and functional, but there’s also some intriguing technology available as well. Standard features include a 4.2-inch screen for the audio system, air conditioning, power windows/locks, a power driver’s seat, and cloth seating. Also available are Bluetooth connectivity, extra USB charging ports in the rear of the center console, a navigation system with an 8-inch screen, IntelliLink infotainment, and a Bose premium sound system.  For 2016, Intellilink adds Apple CarPlay, which works with an iPhone 5 or newer; it mirrors the screen of the iPhone in the Canyon’s screen for an easier user interface. The Cayon is offered in three trims: SL, Base, and SLE.

Standard safety features include a rearview camera, six airbags, antilock brakes, and an electronic stability system. The Canyon also offers several safety technology options, including forward collision alerts and lane departure warnings.
